GRIN'S RULE-BOOK WRANGLE

Greg Hancock admitted “I just want to think about racing; not all the things I can’t do” after opting out of the Polish Ekstraliga.

American legend Greg Hancock admitted “I just want to think about racing; not all the things I can’t do” after opting out of the Polish Ekstraliga.

The top flight riders have now settled their contract dispute with the league, which threatened heavy restrictions on the use of sponsorship logos on bikes and kevlars, personal appearances in Poland and selling personal merchandise, along with a host of penalties for missing meetings.

There are too many rules and regulations in my mind, and I just didn’t want to do it anymore at that level with those kinds of demands. I just want to think about racing; not all the things I can’t do.

Greg Hancock

The battle prompted Hancock to walk away from the Ekstraliga and he completed a shock transfer to Second Division sleeping giants Rzeszow, who have set their sights firmly on back-to-back promotions.

Grin is one of the masters of the commercial side of speedway. And while the 47-year-old still has the pace to star on the shale in the Ekstraliga, he admits the threat of heavier contractual restrictions took the shine off the competition.

Hancock, who has also signed for Dackarna in Sweden, said: “Everyone has their own opinion, but it was my choice to step away.

“For me, it’s too one-sided and I don’t feel I have enough control of myself and my profile and things like that.

“The demands are going up quite heavily. Of course everyone is trying to cut the contract payments down. But the balance for me is incorrect.

“There are too many rules and regulations in my mind, and I just didn’t want to do it anymore at that level with those kinds of demands. I just want to think about racing; not all the things I can’t do.”
